ISRAEL AFTER  DESTROYING  PALESTINE: ABBAS

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says Israel is pursuing the ultimate destruction of Palestine, citing the examples of the efforts made by Tel Aviv toward the realization of the goal.
“It (Israel) employs policies aimed at destroying what’s left of Palestine,” Abbas wrote in an opinion piece published in The Huffington Post on Tuesday. “Israel demolishes our homes, swallows up our land and works at breaking the spirit and will of our people.”
Wanton subjugation in the West Bank
Abbas referred to the move by Tel Aviv to set up checkpoints and build an “annexation wall” in Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank thus imposing restriction on Palestinians’ movement.
“Israeli forces and leaders aid extremist attacks and religious zealots’ attempts to assert control over Al Aqsa Mosque and ignite a religious conflict,” said Abbas. He was referring to the recent wave of violence that has seen Israeli settlers and soldiers attacking Palestinian worshipers in the compound of the al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest site, following the deployment of Israeli troops to the area for the Jewish Rosh Hashanah New Year holiday.
As another case in point, he referred to the July 31 arson attack by extremist Israeli settlers in the town of Duma, located 25 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of the city of Nablus in the West Bank, which killed an 18-month-old Palestinian baby boy and inflicted burns on the victim’s parents and eventually led to their deaths, too.

Destruction in Gaza
Abbas also said, “Palestinians in the Gaza Strip continue to suffer the wounds of last year’s barbaric war as Israel’s cruel blockade imprisons the entire population and renders the Strip uninhabitable.”
Israel’s 50-day military aggression against the Gaza Strip started in early July and ended on August 26 last year. It left nearly 2,200 Palestinians, including 577 children, dead. Over 11,100 others – including 3,374 children, 2,088 women and 410 elderly people – were also wounded.

Since 2007, Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza, which has caused a serious decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty in the Palestinian territory.

‘Not alone’
Abbas, however, expressed delight at the imminent raising of the Palestinian flag at the United Nations (UN)’s headquarters in New York, which has been scheduled to take place on Wednesday following a vote at the UN General Assembly in favor of the measure.
“The General Assembly’s vote confirmed again that we, the people of Palestine, are not alone in our quest for freedom, fulfillment of our rights and an end to decades of Israeli occupation and oppression.”
