Saudi forces have reportedly stormed shops in a Shia region in the kingdom, opening fire on people and injuring a number of them.

According to a tweet by El-Ekhbariya TV, the security forces on Monday raided shops in Awamiyah, and shot at people.

Three people sustained injuries in the attack, witnesses said.

The Saudi forces reportedly arrested one of those critically injured in the incident. The man was a shop assistant, local people said.

The report does not say why the raids have taken place.

Saudi Shias have been long subjected to discrimination and attack in the kingdom, including shootings and bombings.

The Persian Gulf monarchy has come under fire from international human rights organizations, which have criticized it for failing to address the rights situation in the kingdom.

This comes as a wave of demonstrations also began in the oil-rich and Shia-dominated Eastern Province in the kingdom in 2011, with the protesters calling for political reform and an end to widespread discrimination. Several people have been killed and many others injured or arrested during the demonstrations.
