British Prime Minister David Cameron is preparing to launch a plan to force Muslim women in the country to learn English or face deportation.
Britain’s media said on Monday that Prime Minister David Cameron plans to launch a plan based on which Muslim women will be forced to learn English or face deportation.
The plan – which the media say is meant “to foster greater integration by Muslim women” – has been unveiled in a column that Cameron wrote for The Times as well as through an interview on the BBC’s Today Programme, reported The Business Insider.
Based on the plan, anyone coming into Britain on a spousal visa will be tested after two and a half years to see if their English has improved. If it is realized that the individual’s English has not improved, they could be kicked out along with any children they might have.
The policy doesn't technically target Muslim women, but Cameron spent much of his time on the Today Programme explaining why Muslim women need to speak better English, wrote The Business Insider. In The Times, the prime minister said, there are 190,000 British Muslim women who speak little or no English and that 40,000 of these women speak no English whatsoever, it added.
Britain, Cameron said, needed to take on the "backward attitudes" of some men whom he said exerted damaging control over their wives, sisters and daughters.
"Someone can move to here with very basic English and there's no requirement to improve it over time. We will change that. We will now say: if you don't improve your fluency, that could affect your ability to stay in the UK," Cameron wrote in his column.
"This will help make it clear to those men who stop their partners from integrating that there are consequences."
The government will invest 20 million pounds ($28 million) in English classes for women in isolated communities, and from October this year will begin testing those who have come in to
Britain on a spousal visa to check if their language skills have improved, Reuters reported.
