Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry says fire coming from the direction of Yemen has killed a Saudi guard on the kingdom’s border with its southern neighbor.

The fatality was caused on Thursday after a post located in the southwestern Saudi district of Jizan came under “heavy fire from a mountainous area in Yemen," the ministry said in a statement, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.

According to some reports, the latest death brings to 60 the number of Saudis killed along the border by Yemeni forces’ retaliatory attacks against the kingdom, which is continuing military aggression against the impoverished country. However, the Yemenis cite a much higher figure.

On March 26, Saudi Arabia began its aggression against Yemen – without a UN mandate – in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to the country's fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

The conflict has so far left about 4,500 people dead and thousands of others wounded, the UN says. Local Yemeni sources, however, say the fatality figure is much higher.

Last Friday, attacks by Ansarullah fighters and their allied Army units killed dozens of Saudi, Emirati, and Bahraini soldiers in the west-central Yemen Ma’rib Province.
